A Soap Opera

I have to tell you that I have struggled with writing about the story of Samson and Delilah. However, there are several lessons to learn from this interesting relationship. Reading it reminds me of a story line for a soap opera. So let’s think about it. Guy sees a pretty girl and falls head over heels in “love”. Girl is not what she seems. She is in cahoots with the Philistines. She will be paid a pretty price so she is hanging around for the money. Her job is to figure out where Samson gets his strength. Samson lets this little piece of information go right over his head. He just “loves” her. Over and over again she tries to trick Samson until her nagging go so bad that “he was tired to death” so he gives in and tells her. So, true to her word she tells the Philistines the truth and has Samson go to sleep on her lap (should I gag now?) and then his hair gets chopped off. More importantly, God leaves him. He ends up with his eyes gouged out (yuck) and thrown into prison.

This story always makes me wonder about Samson. Maybe all the restrictions of a Nazarite has gone to his head. Who knows, but he is a cad, plain and simple. A woman gets the best of him. That could be a reminder to us ladies! We have a lot of power. It depends how we chose to use it that matters.

This does remind me in all seriousness that God can and will use any situation for his purposes. What did you get out of it? I would love to know.

In Christ Alone,

Jill
